PKA - Our Story

Pelts, Kirkhart and Associates has actively served the New Orleans community since opening this multi-clinician practice in the Garden District, at 1539 Jackson Avenue, in 2006.

Our business was conceived in 2005 during those months following Hurricane Katrina when so many New Orleanians were evacuated and scattered throughout the country. New Orleans was in dire need to address the emotional toll that the storm and rebuilding efforts took on the community. We were hopeful to return and begin recovery, to get back on track in our lives. We existed in midst of so much uncertainty. It created an unusual opening for re-creation— and that is what happened. Psychiatrist Dr. Paul Pelts initiated a call to Dr. Kathryn Kirkhart, a psychologist colleague, asking a simple question, “Would you be interested in going into practice together?”

That phone call between the two evacuees living and working in temporary quarters, led to a process of exploration and planning for a model of clinical outpatient care. Knowing the potential need for mental health care within a ravaged and recovering community, we acknowledged the importance of getting up and running as soon as possible. Following a complete build out of office spaces, recruitment of staff, and well-respected associates practicing psychiatry, psychology, and social work, we opened our doors in July 2006.

Since inception, Pelts, Kirkhart & Associates grew to include providers of an even broader array of mental health care and with a variety of psychotherapeutic, pharmacologic and adjunctive approaches. We assist people of all ages and backgrounds who seek emotional health evaluation, intervention, and support in their lives.

We continue to offer face-to-face sessions on location; our clinicians also offer the alternative of virtual sessions of mental health care support.

As we continue to expand, grow, and work with new clients, we look forward to answering any questions about our current services.
